This block was the site of the first church in town – the Salvation Army Barracks, which opened in 1894.
It was then purchased by the Methodist Church in 1904 and they built a new, larger church on the site in 1911.
Renovations were conducted in 1941, which included connecting the building to the electricity grid that had just been extended to Eumundi during the Second World War (1939-1945). Further renovations occurred in 1958 when the front of the building was significantly changed.
The Methodist Church became part of the Uniting Church in 1977. By the early 1980s, activity in the church had waned and regular services had stopped, although weddings were still conducted in the chapel occasionally.
The EHA bought the old church in 1995 and moved the museum into it in 1996. Extensions were made at the back to accommodate an office and a locally built waggon that had been rediscovered. The old holding cells were moved to the rear of the property in 2005 and a gallery and meeting place called 'Wan'din'in' was constructed behind the museum in 2015.
In 2020 the museum closed for a period for major renovations before re-opening in June 2022. The museum closed again in June 2026 to complete these major renovations, anticipating to re-open in December 2026.
